How Many Martha Washingtons Does It Take to Teach Your Students?

…For our latest distance learning broadcast, we decided it took two of them!

In order to get to know “The Real Martha Washington,” elementary students in our live studio audience had the opportunity to ask questions of not one, but two expert historical interpreters who portray the “first First Lady!” Mary Wiseman, Mount Vernon’s “resident Martha,” helped students get to know Mrs. Washington after the Revolutionary War and in her later years, while Susan Zickel introduced student to the possibly less familiar “pre-Revolutionary” Martha who married General Washington and moved to Mount Vernon in 1759. The program also featured commentary from Cokie Roberts, author of Founding Mothers and the recent Ladies of Liberty.

If you missed the broadcast of The Real Martha Washington, you can order a DVD or request a free DVD while supplies last by visiting our distance learning broadcast production partner, The Fairfax Network, at this link. Or, you can visit our website.

  1. Venieta McLeod Says:

After visiting Mount Vernon and meeting Martha (Mary Wiseman) I feel that I can recommend this video; though I am ordering it and have not yet seen it, I am sure Martha will step right out of history and charm my students, as she did with me at Mount Vernon.

Portraits in Schools

Kids holding George Washington Portrait

Mount Vernon recently invited K-12 schools nationwide to request framed portraits of George Washington to display in a respectful, prominent place.

The response was overwhelming: thousands of schools submitted letters! Along with the portrait, schools received curriculum materials to help explore our first president’s contributions.
