Educators, we welcome your reservations to attend the Seventh Annual George Washington Teachers’ Institute, which will take place on July 21-22 at Mount Vernon. 2008’s Institute will focus on the Constitution and feature the usual array of noted historians and authors, including Cokie Roberts, Woody Holton, John Kaminski, Katherine Allgor, Harlow Unger, Ken Bowling, and Linda Monk. George Washington’s role as President of the Constitutional Convention is often overlooked. He began writing of the need to establish a strong, independent nation under one “Federal Head” long before the Constitutional Convention convened in Philadelphia in 1787.
On July 21 and 22, 2008, noted historians and authors Woody Holton, John Kaminski, Katherine Allgor, Harlow Unger, Ken Bowling, and Linda Monk will convene at Mount Vernon’s annual George Washington Teachers’ Institute to share their insights on the Constitution from its inception at the Constitutional Convention through its application during the First Federal Congress.
On July 22, ABC commentator and author Cokie Roberts joins the program to moderate the concluding panel discussion, “The Constitution and the Disenfranchised,” featuring Woody Holton and Katherine Allgor. The panel will explore how the Constitution, as written by the framers, addressed the needs of the lower classes, women, free blacks, and slaves.
The program concludes with the presentation of the 2008 Mount Vernon History Teacher of the Year award, followed by a book signing and a private cocktail reception on the piazza of Washington’s home.

I love Cokie Roberts! Will you guys have a book signing for all the authors that will be lecturing, including Cokie? And will there be wine at the reception on the Piazza, just out of curiosity? I have met past teachers that have attended and they have all gushed about this event- I am looking forward to finally coming myself!

Thanks to you both for your enthusiasm! All authors, including Cokie Roberts, will indeed be signing and selling their books on the days they appear at the Institute. And yes, GWlvr, as befitting a reception held on the Piazza of the Mount Vernon mansion (which housed Washington’s extensive wine cellar), there *will* be wine (and cheese)!

The George Washington Wired is just what the Mount Vernon website needs to highlight everything that The Education Department has to offer to the teachers in the surrounding areas and afar.

Thanks!-we agree! It’s true that we offer a lot of great opportunities and materials for educators, but we’d also like to expand our offerings! I just finished the George Washington Teachers’ Institute and I cannot say enough about this incredible opportunity. I learned more than I ever fathomed that I could and I met a fantastic group of teachers who will be considered dear friends and valued colleagues for my entire life. If you want history to come alive for your students, GWTI is an opportunity that you should explore.
